"Two beers please."

2 Beers"But sir," the stewardess warned, "the flight is only 30 minutes."

As he settled into the window seat by my wife, Casey replied, "I could down a six pack."

Casey was clean cut, tattooed with matching earrings and an attitude to match! It was an early morning flight and I had planned to have some quiet time reading my Bible and didn’t want any interruptions. The Lord had other plans. Before long Casey and my wife were in deep conversation and she was trying to involve me. Judging by how quickly he was downing his favorite brew and by his seemingly carefree attitude, I didn’t perceive him as a ready candidate for to receive Christ in the 20 minutes remaining in our flight.

As much as I wanted to leave the chit chat to them so I could continue with some much needed time in the Word, the Holy Spirit kept stirring in me to participate in what He was doing. "But Lord," I argued, "there are only twenty minutes before landing… that’s not enough time to do any good."

As I opened the Scriptures, my eyes fell upon this passage in Proverbs 24:

"Deliver those that are drawn toward death, hold back those that are stumbling to the slaughter; If you say, Behold, we knew it not; does not He that weighs the heart consider it? And He that keeps your soul, does not He know it? And shall not He render to every man according to his works?"

I may be slow, but I’m not stupid! I immediately turned to Casey and told him how the Lord had been dealing with me to speak to him and how reluctant I was until He directed me to that passage. When I read it to him, he was visibly shaken.

Casey Was Visibly Shaken...

In the time that remained, I asked him if he had ever lied, cheated, stolen or committed adultery. While not being specific, he readily agreed that he had done some of those things. I shared with him that we all have done things like that and we all have fallen short of the standard God has. I let him know there was nothing we could do that was good enough to make it right with God, that Jesus came and gave His life to pay the price we could never pay and give us a life we could never otherwise have.

Amazingly, his heart was pricked and I asked him if we could pray with him to receive Christ. After explaining that a little, the three of us took hands and we all three prayed. His prayer was repentant, genuine and moving. As the plane touched down on the runway he became a new creature in Christ, smiling, teary eyed and holding on to my wife’s hand all the way to the gate.

Here Was My Mistake...

What I had underestimated was the persuasive power of the Holy Spirit. He guided us on what to say and led that young man through a process — a process that has brought countless millions to Christ. A process that can be applied to every area of life and I want to share that process with you. I call it the 7 Laws of Persuasion – How the Holy Spirit Persuades the Heart.

Speaking of the Holy Spirit, Jesus says in John 16:8,

“And when He is come, He will convince the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment...”
The Holy Spirit will "convince," or as some translations read, "reprove," even "convict." I believe it’s fair to assume the Holy Spirit knows a lot about being persuasive and it seems He can be amazingly effective. So let’s take a look at the process.

In this verse, there are 3 things that He intends to accomplish.

  • First
    The first is to convince the world of sin. The word for sin in the Greek carries the meaning to “fall short of the mark,” much like an arrow might fall short of a target. Whether in business or in life, if you want someone to change, they must first realize they are falling short of their target. Until and unless they face the fact that they are falling short of their goals, their dreams, their expectations, they won’t make any changes.


  • Second
    After they realize their “sin” (their falling short of the goal), they then must be convinced that their righteousness or right-intended actions will never be enough to bridge that gap. In business, a person might know they are missing the mark but are counting on their current well-intended actions to bridge that gap. They will not take action or make a change until and unless they understand clearly that they are falling short and their best current actions will not be enough to rectify the situation.


  • Third
    Then, the Holy Spirit convinces them of judgment. That is to say, there’s a price to pay. If you continue down this path, not only are you falling short of the goal, but your plan to rectify it isn’t working and if you don’t take corrective action, you will have a price to pay.
Every business person who is going through a buying process, goes through these three steps. Your job is to lead them through it.
